At the heart of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy stands Dr. Milton H. Erickson (1901-1980), widely regarded as one of the most influential hypnotherapists of the 20th century. Despite facing significant personal challenges, including polio as a teenager that left him temporarily paralyzed, Erickson developed extraordinary observational skills and an unparalleled understanding of the unconscious mind.
His revolutionary approach rejected authoritarian hypnosis in favor of a permissive, individualized style that respected each person’s unique psychology. Erickson believed that trance was a natural, everyday experience, and that therapeutic change happens when we speak directly to the unconscious in its own language – through stories, metaphors, and indirect suggestion.
My training in these powerful methods comes through direct study with Stephen Brooks at British Hypnosis Research, one of the UK’s foremost authorities on Ericksonian approaches. Many modern therapeutic approaches, including NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), owe their foundations to Erickson’s pioneering work. His case studies remain required reading for therapists worldwide, demonstrating remarkable results with even the most “resistant” clients.
Unlike traditional hypnosis that relies on direct commands, Ericksonian Hypnotherapy uses:
• Indirect Suggestions – Gentle, conversational language that bypasses conscious resistance
• Therapeutic Metaphors – Stories that allow the unconscious mind to find its own solutions
• Utilization Technique – Working creatively with a client’s existing behaviors and beliefs
• Naturalistic Trance – Recognizing that absorption (like daydreaming) is already a trance state
When establishing London Hypnotics, I sought an approach that:
• Honors each client’s individuality rather than applying rigid protocols
• Works cooperatively with resistance instead of confronting it
• Trusts in the client’s innate capacity for healing and change
• Produces deep, lasting transformation at the unconscious level
My training in Ericksonian methods allows me to create truly tailored sessions where change unfolds naturally. Whether addressing anxiety, habits, or personal growth, this approach helps clients access their own inner wisdom.
